The Lancaster

Tamiya 1/48 kit

One evening at the club it was announced that a competition would be held in which any model entered, of any type, should be painted in black or white. After some thought, I remembered I had a Lancaster kit in the loft for about 16 years. Not built because of it's size and where to put it when finished. I chose to paint it in the colours of an aircraft flown by 35 Sqn on its return from a visit to the US in 1946 (info Aircam No 12).

It needed a fair bit of work and correction to details, first removing the rivets. From references the cockpit rearranged and added turret interiors. The front turret is much too flat and needs to be more rounded in profile and moved forward. This can be done because the clear plastic is very thick and can be shaped and repolished.

Tamiya have boobed with the wingtip lights, the small one to the front & the large one to the trailing edge is OK on the one side but they have reversed them on the other side. Very strange! But correctable.

I sprayed the model with Halfords White primer all over, drew out and masked the serial numbers under the wings, then used Halfords Semi Gloss black undersides, removing the masking to show large numbers port and starboard. Upper wing roundels were hand painted using a compass, you can draw in pencil very easily on the primer. Codes were black decal sheet cut to form the letters and the Sqn badge hand painted.

Lancaster's got very dirty quickly so weathering was fun. A very enjoyable model to make and took about 2 months.
