Since I got back into building models, I had only built 1/24th and 1/25th scale cars. But with becoming a member of MKSMC, I decided to have a go at building something different from my normal area for the clubs monthly competition.

The last time I built an aircraft, I was still at school ( many moons ago!). So whilst on a shopping trip to Bluewater with the wife, I came across this kit in Model Zone. The theme for that months competition was "The Falklands" and this kit contained two options of helicopters based on HMS Aintrim during the conflict. Of these two, "Humphrey" was the more famous one and is preserved at a museum, so there are plenty of photographs available of this aircraft.

The building of the model was straight forward with nothing complicated about it. I build the model straight out of the box without adding any extra detail to it. The only change that I had done was to leave the main rotor to be removeable for transporting. Once the main construction was done, I looked at the paint colour that was denoted on the instructions. This was incorrect for the model, "Humphrey" is a dark blue and the paint code on the instructions came out grey. So out came a few bottles of Tamiya paint and using the FS colour charts, I mixed up a batch of the correct blue and airbrushed the model.

Unfortunately, I did not get the model completed in time, so it was put aside unfinished for a few months until another monthly competition came up for finishing it. There was a problem with the decals on this kit though, I could not hide the film whatever I did. So I weathered the model to hide this the best I could. I also had a mishap with the probe at the front, I broke it off. So a new one was turned up from a length of aluminium to replace it.

The base that the model stands on is made from a piece of Foamalux with the terrain made out of car bodyfiller and scenic scatter.
