ME110C NightfighterAgain I was using the Eduard set (48 253) and one of the Squadron canopies (9545) to dress it up a bit (have I mentioned that the kit really does need something?) However this time I didn't use the Eduard pilot's seat, I got so into the True Details seats that I used one of those instead. The etch brass seat is fine, and infinitely better than the kit, but the resin seat just looks better, IMHO. The cockpit was again painted RML02 and was then installed into the fuselage halves and basically I just followed the build from the instructions. Don't forget to open the appropriate holes in the wing (bearing in mind that the kit 300 litre tanks are undersized as previously mentioned) and fuselage underside for the fuel tanks/bomb rack (whichever you're using) and the pitot. Also on my kits I had to open up the hole for the inboard aileron mass balance, it's not mentioned and I can't see why it would be flashed over but all mine were. At the stage of the main construction being finished, to make painting easier (and so I wouldn't knock them all off), I left off the landing light, crew ladder, aerial mast from the cockpit top, the exhausts, the loop aerial, the props and spinners, the main wheels, gun barrels, under fuselage aerial and the aerials on the lower rear fuselage. In fact for these last ones I eventually didn't use the kit parts anyway, I used little bits of rod and wire as previously described. I'll also mention the exhausts here. I know I should have drilled them out (at least the ones pointing up) but I was making five of these, OK? Even just doing the ones pointing up that's 60 little fiddly holes. I just couldn't face it. So I painted them black. Call me a wimp if you want, I stand by my choice. It's not like there not enough stuff to do, the masking of three of these canopies with little bits of masking tape took quite long enough, thank you. So onto paint and decals. The airframe was preshaded with black and the standard scheme of RLM65/70/71 applied. (I quite like doing the splinter schemes, it's not too tricky a masking job compared to some.) For this aircraft I was using the 110C Nightfighter option off Tally Ho sheet number 48 006 (which covers a -C and -G). Again, because I had never used Tally Ho decals before I thought I would be smart and (despite the gloss finish of the Xtracolor paint) I also gave the areas to be decaled a coat of Future to help combat silvering. The national insignia came from the Tally Ho sheet but much of the stenciling came from either one of the many Revell G-2 sheets I seem to have collected or from an Aeromaster stencil sheet (148-021). Again there was a little silvering (though not as much as the FCM) and there was a slight misregister between the black and the white on the crosses (which of course you only see when the decal is off the backing paper!). On the subject of the black of these decals, it has a strange greyness to it. I don't know if it shows up on the pictures but it's quite visible. But not a lot I could do about it now. Then it was a coat of matt with a little semi matt to give it a slight sheen followed by a few light sprays of light grey and reddish black where the exhaust staining should be and then onto the little bits. Most were fine except the landing light which seemed overly large and took some trimming, certainly worth dry fitting first (I didn't the first time, learn from my mistakes). Then the canopy parts and nose guns were fitted. I still couldn't face masking ANOTHER canopy so this time I hand painted the larger areas and used thin strips of decal painted with an appropriate colour for the thinner frames. The aerials from the mast to the tail were done with my favourite thin wire and that was it. 5 down, ...Next Last updated 04 November 2007 |
